In Loving Memory of David Lester Motley

May 14, 1945 – August 15, 2025

David Lester Motley, age 80, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2025, in Howell, Michigan, surrounded by his children. Born on May 14, 1945, in Pontiac, Michigan, Dave lived life on his own term - stubborn, uncompromising, and unapologetically himself.

Dave found joy in cutting firewood, tree service, and construction. He had a deep love for old-school country music and could often be found strumming his guitar, singing the songs that spoke to his soul. A cold beer, a quiet sunset, and the company of his little orange cat, KC, were all he needed to feel at peace.

Dave had a special fondness for Michigan’s west side and the rugged beauty of the Upper Peninsula. He enjoyed swimming in all the Great Lakes except Lake Superior, which he always said was “too damn cold.” His humor was dry, his convictions unwavering, and his heart wide open to animals and friends alike.

He is survived by his son, David, and daughter, Marianne, along with his stepchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and many cherished friends. Dave’s legacy is one of grit, music, laughter, and love - a life lived fully and fiercely.

A private memorial will be held in his honor. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to a local animal shelter, in tribute to Dave’s lifelong love for creatures great and small.
